January shopping sales. New year promotion sales

Retail sales january 2008 - Shopping new year

Save Money By Knowing What Month Items Go On Sale

You can save a lot of money by buying items in the month that sellers traditionally reduce prices on that item. Here's a general guideline, by type of item.

Appliances: Manufacturer's introduce new lines in the spring, so dealers are trying to get rid of inventory during the winter months.
Bargain Sales: December through January.

Electronics: Stores want to make room for new new merchandise that debuts at the International Consumer Electronics show the first week in January, so they're very motivated to get rid of their existing inventory, often discounting these items between 20 to 50 percent after the holidays.
Bargain Sales: Late December through January.

Furniture: Sales slow down as summer ends, so dealers start marking down furniture starting Labor Day weekend.
Bargain Sales: September.

School clothes and supplies: Those who wait until school is about to start will miss the bargains on school supplies.
Bargain Sales: July and August.

Winter clothes: Clothing is a popular item for holiday gifts, so sales slow down after the holiday. Retailers drop prices to stimulate more sales.
Bargain Sales: Late December, early January

Cars: Get bargains on new cars that are last year's models just as the new year's models are about to come out (up to 20% off) in October. More bargains take place between Christmas and New Year's as dealers put on a final push for sales before the year end.
Bargain Sales: October and late December

Party dresses and dress-up clothing: Sales for party clothes tend to be peak before the holidays, so retailers drop prices after the holidays to stimulate sales.
Bargain Sales: Late December, January.

White sales: Save 15 to 50% on sheets, blankets, comforters, other bedding, towels, etc. after the holidays.
Bargain Sales: January.

Gifts for women and weddings: Fall is the height of the wedding season, so buying wedding gifts and wedding apparel well before that time will save you money.
Bargain Sales: May.

Save Money By Buying Products At the Right Time of Year

End-of-season sales always offer discounts on items associated with the season that's about to end, as retailers make room for the new season's items. To take advantage of these sales, you have to plan ahead.

Before the January sales arrive, take some time out to have a look in all your favourite shops and make a list of anything you want or need but can’t quite afford. When you hit the high street in January, take your list with you.

If there are any specific dream items of clothing you have on the list it’s likely you’ve already tried them on, so you know exactly which size to look for – which can be a great time saver. Same goes with having measurements for sofas and other furniture. This trick will also help you to avoid buying unnecessary junk – if you liked it in December and still love it now it is more likely to be a worthwhile purchase.

Look out for offers that seem too good to be true. More often than not, they are. Always read the small print on any adverts before rushing into making a purchase. Check out the quality, the warranty, and anything else that might make the buying decision easier. Have a good think about whether the amount of the reduction is really a bargain – and is it a bargain if you really don’t need it?

Discount shopping guide to After Christmas Sales

You're armed with three gift cards from your favorite stores. Retailers want to unload their inventory. It's the perfect combo -- you with money, stores with goods they don't want. I'm talking after-Christmas sales, people.

They say retailers are more desperate than ever this year to get our money, and that means big discounts on some of the holiday's hottest items. Dan de Grandpre, founder and CEO of dealnews, an online source for retail sales, shares his tips for this year's after-Christmas sales:

Tip #1: Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, taught us that there are no rules when it comes to sales this year. Retailers started slashing prices a week before Black Friday and the same is likely to happen with Christmas. After-Christmas deals may start as early as Dec. 20, especially for online stores that won't be able to get packages to their destination by Christmas if the buyer chooses regular shipping after the 19th or 20th.

Tip #2: The week after Christmas you'll see another 10 to 20 percent taken off already discounted items. Shoppers will benefit from steeper discounts this year more than any other year because retailers are more desperate for business. Even big-ticket items not on this year's holiday wish lists will get slashed, such as furniture and mattresses. Think end-of-year sales.

Tip #3: Be a shopping snob. That means be picky, be informed and wait until you see something you like. Prices have nowhere to go but down. Even consider bringing out your negotiating skills with stores that allow that type of thing. Get competitor's prices, including those online, and take advantage of price matching programs where stores will match the prices of their competitors.

Tip #4: Some of the best after-Christmas deals will be on anything associated with the holiday's hottest items, such as toys and electronics. Big-screen, high-definition TVs will drop in price the week after Christmas and then come back up and hold steady until the Super Bowl. Prices on computers were slashed last year and the same may happen again this year. Sale watcher de Grandpre also expects some deals coming out of the large discount department stores such as Kohl's and Target.

Tip #5: Don't fret if you're one of those people who lives on the edge and does their Christmas shopping at the 11th hour. You may see discounts on items, as well as deals on shipping at online sites. The last day to do online shopping is the Friday before Christmas this year. That means many online stores will be offering free shipping or discounted shipping upgrades, such as $5 on next-day arrival. The drawback for last-minute shoppers is that early birds may have already snatched all the good colors and sizes.

Tip #6: Not all the good deals will be on the holiday's hottest items. Retailers will be trying to get rid of software in preparation for their 2008 releases. Intuit, which makes Quicken and TurboTax, offered some good discounts last year on some of their most popular software. You'll also be able to get some good deals on kitchen electronics and other home items such as linens and silverware.

Tip #7: De Grandpre also expects to see some good deals on high-definition DVD players and Blu-ray players. This is the first year this technology has been affordable so retailers will try to make them even more affordable after Christmas. That also means that stores will be offering good deals on high-definition DVD movies, as well as the Blu-ray discs.

After Christmas sales can be a great way to save money on things you would buy anyway, without paying full price. As you see the things that are on sale, try to predict which of those things you are likely to need during the next year.

Don't limit your thinking to Christmas! Consider how you may use after Christmas items for other occasions in the coming year. Be creative!

Don't go crazy and buy everything they have just because it is marked down. If you buy 20 of something you don't need and eventually just get rid of it, you didn't really save by getting it on clearance.

If you want to get some great deals but you also want a lot of selection, you'll want to show up in the store pretty early on December 26th. You can get deeper discounts if you wait several days or a week for the stores to mark items all the way down to 75% off. The down side of waiting is that the item you want may be gone if you wait too long. If you really have to have it, you probably want to get it sooner rather than wait.

If there's something that you want at Wal-Mart, you will definitely want to get there the first thing on December 26th because Wal-Mart attracts the die hard after Christmas shoppers who buy like hungry locusts. ;-)

You can often find good buys at grocery and drug stores a week or two after Christmas because there's not as much demand for after Christmas items in those stores.

Here are some of the things to consider as you visit after Christmas sales:

* Buy new Christmas decorations for next year. This seems obvious to some of us, but if you've never thought about it, you can usually get lights, lawn decorations, indoor decorations and other holiday-specific items for 50-75% off right after Christmas. We like to add to our display every year and it is much less expensive to buy after Christmas this year rather than before Christmas next year. Even our Christmas tree was a 50% off after Christmas buy. (Don't try this with live trees! They don't keep well! ;-)

* Buy "Baby's First Christmas" items (pajamas, bibs, ornaments, etc.) for those friends and relatives expecting babies in the next year.

* Purchase holiday craft items. Christmas ribbons, needlework, and other craft supplies are often marked down to 75% off. Get started on those projects and get them done early. Don't forget to get enough red ribbon and craft supplies for Valentines day.

* Buy your red Valentine's Day and green St. Patrick's Day candy on clearance after Christmas. You can also freeze Christmas chocolate for year-round baking.

* Christmas isn't just red and green any more. You can get every color under the rainbow now. If you are decorating a room or having a special party, such as an anniversary you can purchase your supplies for 75% off. I've also purchased things like specialty lights for my son who collects anything that will light up.

* Purchase gifts for next Christmas, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day and teachers' gifts. You can often find wonderful gift bath sets that make great gifts for teachers at 50% off. There are also bath sets for kids, make up sets for girls and cologne and perfume for men and women that you can give for any occasion. I purchase several extra girls and boys gifts sets for the kids to take to birthday parties. I buy hubby's cologne for the year (again, as a gift set) and give it to him on Father's Day. My sister in law liked a particular large red candle that I happened to notice was on sale after Christmas. I purchased it for $2 instead of the $10 regular price.

* If you have a wedding coming up, look for decorations with your wedding colors after Christmas. You can also get tablecloths and napkins for your household on clearance after Christmas. You can buy these at up to 75% off and use them every day.

* Look for wrapping paper for other occasions. Stores have colored and white tissue paper and wrapping paper that isn't necessarily just for Christmas. You can also buy Christmas paper for next to nothing after Christmas and save it for next Christmas or use it white side out for other holidays.

* I buy the pre-packaged gingerbread kits that are now available for my kids. For $2 each, it is much easier to have the house already baked and rolled out. I save them for the kids to decorate next year. (Of course we don't eat them.)

I buy about 3/4 of my gift items for the year the days and weeks after Christmas. By doing this, I save hundreds of dollars on gifts over the year.

Be a savvy shopper. Cheap retailers

Affordable grocery shopping. Money saving ideas

1. Rethink the list: Plan meals first, make your list second. Consumers with shopping lists spend over 41% more than those who don't use one. When planning meals, make sure the week’s circular is in front of you. To avoid those emergency runs, make a master list of the ten meals your family eats most often and keep those ingredients on hand.

2. Stalk the markdowns: Markdowns can ring up as much as 50% off the original price, so it’s possible to save $5 to $20 a week on meat alone using this strategy. Ask the store manager when meat, dairy, bread and produce are marked down. Stores often slash prices as items near expiration dates or to make way for incoming stock. Be sure to check labels. Some companies are now labeling products “organic” or “low-fat” even if they’ve always been so. Also, many of the “low-fat” items you pay a premium for may have just as many calories as competing brands without the claim.

3. Buy frozen produce: Buy spinach, peas and corn frozen rather than fresh to cut cost but not nutritional value. If you can only afford to buy some organic food, make it produce. Organically grown fruits and veggies do not contain anywhere close to the level of pesticides that conventionally grown produce does. Bananas, canned or frozen corn, broccoli, and canned or frozen peas have the fewest residues. Be sure to buy your fair share of apples, pears, bell peppers, imported grapes, peaches, potatoes and strawberries.

4. Buy vs. use: The biggest mistake at the meat counter is buying too much. You can save money and get more flavor when you use ground chuck instead of ground round in burgers. Due to its high fat content, ground chuck makes a juicer burger. Purchase the large “family pack” and repackage it into smaller amounts for the freezer. Ground round doesn’t yield as much fat when it’s cooked, so there is less shrinkage, making it ideal for meat loaf, stuffed peppers and meatballs. Center-cut bone-in pork loin chops will give you the best flavor for your money. They cost about $2 to $3 dollars less than boneless chops and you’ll often find them on sale. They’re flavorful and juicy. Try to get them thick — an inch and a half is best. Boneless turkey cutlets can be used in many recipes that call for chicken or veal. To ensure the turkey cutlets emerge from the pan crisp and golden brown, lightly flour them first, then sauté briefly in a mixture of butter and oil.

5. Train little shoppers: Grocery shopping with children can add $100 to $400 a month to your bill. Not only do parents with kids in tow spend more time in the store — which can really add up each time you toss more and more items in the cart — but kids are masters of impulse buying. If you can’t go solo, turn the kids into smart shoppers. Give them some choices: They get to pick one lunch-box treat or two snacks. Or have them use real money (their own, or, say, $5 you give them) for anything not on the list.

6. Shop around: Toiletries, paper goods and other items are cheaper to buy in bulk at a warehouse discount store. Don’t buy different cleaners that do the same job. The main thing is killing germs and getting a room clean, so one all-purpose antibacterial cleaner will do the trick. Some cleaners come in concentrates that you can dilute. A spray bottle and water extends your purchase.

7. Check it twice: Grocery stores are not always reset with current sale prices. Your chances of being charged the full price on a sale item are high. To get it right, watch the scanner and speak up if you see a discrepancy. Americans lose between $1 billion and $3 billion a year in scanning errors!

Discount social shopping. Internet shopping deals

What is social shopping? It’s essentially a mashup that resembles social bookmarking, social networking and comparison shopping in a blender. A bunch of flavors of social shopping websites have popped up as of late, creating a great opportunity for online retailers to engage in some low-cost word-of-mouth marketing.

We’ve hunted down a number of different sites that you can submit your retail products to, and provided a brief summary of each site’s features. Since you never know where a sale is going to come from, it’s worth it to get into as many of these sites as you can and track which bring success and which are just a hassle.

Social Shopping Bookmarking Sites

These sites allow you to bookmark, tag, share and even blog products you like. Some allow you to join groups or even earn revenue from your picks.

Here’s a tip: if you’re going to submit your own products – tag with reckless abandon. Browse popular tags for ideas (as they will be surfed often) and also more targeted, specific terms, to maximize your likelihood of being found using search boxes.

Social Deals and Coupons Sites

Find deals on specific items, browse posted coupon codes and special offers from Dealplumber’s database, or post your product or affiliate product coupons. “Free Stuff” and “Free Shipping” categories, too. Pipe your products here.
Dealtagger Free listings for merchants, woot-woot! Add a button to your bookmarks toolbar or submit your deals here one by one. Join groups, tag, browse, and keep your peeps updated with Twitter tweets.

Social Comparison Engines

Now for some gray-area social shopping sites. The following are comparison engines which have either social shopping features, or a free way of submitting your own products to them, and thus being worthy of honorable mention here for etailers looking to cast a broad net over sites that we believe are going to take off.
like.com A visual search engine that lets you zoom in on a detail of a product and see similar items based on colour, shape, pattern, price etc. Categories include watches, shoes, handbags, jewellery, clothing.

Did we miss your favorite site? Something you want someone to build? What missing from social commerce site? What’s the real value? Drop us a comment to share your experiences with social shopping.

Discount Retailers - Affordable Shopping Sites.

Affordable Shopping Sites For The Smart Discouted Stuff Hunter

There are hundreds of affordable shopping sites out there, and for those of us who are unwilling to let go of our cash except for the best discount stuff sold at an even better price, it's a jungle out there. We can get easily lost in the confusing price lists, the less than reliable comparison charts and the endless searches we have to do just to hunt for the right thing to spend our money on. Most of the time we just give up looking and settle for what looks good, knowing that there must be something out there that's better and we just missed it.

Discount Online Shopping - Grab an Online Discount

Shopping online is said to be the last in hip, people like this way of purchasing items because many retailers offer online discounts. You can buy anything online - clothes, DVDs, books, food, etc. That's why if you take advantage of all the online discounts offered, then you will reduce your expenses and you never have a budget deficit again. However, shopping online has some dangers. When shopping in store it is quite easy to buy things you dont actually need, when shopping online this possibility increases at least twice. There are lots of people who start with online discounts but soon run into debt as they have bought many useless items. So think twice before buying anything on the internet.

Discount retailers

Many retailers offer online discounts because they want to get you hooked to shopping online. There is nothing bad in that. Research shows that people prefer buying things which are convenient of obtaining and easy to be brought home. This helps online sells because buyers dont have to leave the house, carry the item home and so on. All they have to do is purchase it online and wait the delivery guy knock on their door. Moreover, you get discounts when shopping online.

The online discount can help the retailers compete with your local store. The majority of people prefer buying food, clothes and music from nearby stores, but nothing can be nearer than your computer, right? Of course, when shopping online you will have to wait for the mail and this can be assumed as a disadvantage
